Do nothing unvirtuous
Do everything virtuous
Train your mind.
This is Buddhadharma.

Atisha

Atisha

Under the umbrella of “seven points of mind training,” 59 pithy slogans were taught by the great master Atisha (982-1054 CE) in response to historically challenging times in Tibet. Later compiled and widely embraced, they served as a path of formal meditation, with practical application in everyday life.

The heart of these teachings is the wisdom of bodhichitta, which manifests as cherishing others more than oneself. This provocative view has proven to be the antidote to the basic cause of suffering: a false belief in separateness, which unfailingly generates unhappiness for others and oneself.

Atisha’s slogans are a classic guide to putting an awake mind and heart into practice—and they could not be more timely. We warmly invite you to join us in this two-part series of lojong contemplation and practice.

Students are encouraged to attend both weekends and will be able to register for both at one time. Those unable to attend both may take advantage of study groups which will be scheduled to review the teachings and catch-up.

Lojong I: ‘Loving’ in the Deepest Sense
May 10-12 (Mothers Day weekend)
The first weekend will focus on the main practice of training in bodhichitta, or awakened heart, and the practice of tonglen, known as exchanging oneself for others. This program will be taught by Lopön Barbara Ryan.

Lojong II: Cultivating Loving Kindness in Everyday Life
June 7-9
The second weekend will explore the power of Atisha’s slogans as a means to train the mind into empathy and understanding, in a way that allows for a renewal of sanity and compassion in one’s own life and the lives of others. This program will be taught by Lopön Helen Berliner.
