Discovering Bodhicitta, Awakened Heart
Wednesday, August 15, 7:00 p.m.
Our lives and the lives of those around us are deeply intertwined. Our actions of body, speech and mind have an immense impact on family and friends, people we work with, our community, and the world at large. When we act according to the truth of our interconnectedness, we discover our natural open and compassionate nature. This is Bodhichitta, awakened heart. When we forget this, and act with aggression, hatred, or selfish grasping, we create endless suffering for ourselves and others.
The Buddhist path is focused on cultivating this inherent wisdom-compassion, allowing us to rest more fully within it, and to learn to see all beings through the lens of love rather than fear, and kindness rather than aggression.
We invite everyone to join us for this Wednesday evening talk by H.E. Mindrolling Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche on the path of discovering and strengthening our innate Bodhichitta , which has the power to enhance the lives of others and our own lives as well.
The Power of Karma and the Importance of Merit
Thursday, August 16, 7:00 p.m.
We live in the thick of samsara (the world of suffering) and often feel helplessly caught in its grip. Although we believe there is a way out and long for this, we lack the confidence and strength needed to break free. The erroneous belief in ego tricks us into repeating habitual patterns that reinforce rather than loosen that grip. This is how karma – the law of cause and effect – can keep us needlessly entrapped.
The practice of accumulating merit, sometimes misunderstood, is a practical method for building up causes and conditions that enable the confidence and determination needed to pull away from samsara’s grip.
In this Thursday evening talk, H.E. Mindrolling Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche will teach on the relationship between karma and merit, and how merit allows the heart to be more flexible, kind, and wakeful, thereby reducing the power of negative karma and freeing the inherent awakened nature within.
Eliminating the Darkness of Ignorance (year 2).
Friday Night, August 17–Sunday, August 19
-Friday: 7:00 p.m.
-Saturday and Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (approximately)
The Mahamudra teachings on calm abiding and insight meditation provide the means through which we can truly dispel the darkness of ignorance. In this way we see through the endless cycle of suffering and confusion and experience the wisdom that is, in fact, already always present as the very nature of our mind and all phenomena.
The obscurations that cover this natural wisdom can be thick and sometimes unseen, so a graduated path to progressively removing the layered veils that keep us in the darkness of ignorance is beneficial. Eliminating the Darkness of Ignorance, composed by the Ninth Karmapa, Wangchug Dorje, is among the most quintessential of all the Mahamudra texts and clearly elucidates all the stages of the path to liberation.
H.E. Mindrolling Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche began a cycle of the teachings from Eliminating the Darkness of Ignorance last summer, with a deep and refreshing look at shamatha meditation, and will continue this year. These teachings on formless meditation are beneficial to students of all levels of practice. You do not have to have attended in 2017 to participate this year. Everyone is welcome.
